Duration: 4 Days
Division: Telecommunications
Course code: JS1
Venues: Clapham or Derby
Who Should Attend
Delegates who wish to develop skills in terminating, jointing and testing of signalling cable types, B2, C2, jelly filled and power cable. Delegates should be familiar with the use of a fluke and megger.
Objectives
On successful completion of the course the delegate will be able to:
- Explain the basic construction of cables used on the course and state their main use
- Select the correct cable, given the cable identification
- State method of jointing each of the cables listed
- Select the correct crimping tool for each type of crimp
- Prepare the cable prior to jointing to an acceptable standard ensuring that faults are not introduced
- Apply heat shrink and scotch cast closures to complete joints using the manufacturers instructions
- Carry out a continuity test on a cable to detect open circuit or high resistance faults
- Carry out insulation resistance tests and make records
- Carry out a bell test to identify any crossed cable cores
- Ensure that procedures are carried out safely in accordance with rules and safety instructions
Content
- Selection of cable
- Basic cable construction and use
- Jointing methods
- Selection of crimping tools
- Cable preparation prior to jointing
- Cable jointing practical work
- Safety considerations
- Continuity tests
- Insulation resistance tests
- Determination of crossed cores
- Application of closures heat shrink and scotch cast
Learning Approach
Theory together with practical work which constitutes approximately 80% of the course and includes:
- Joint and terminate using crimps, a 7 core tail cable using heat shrink closures
- Joint and terminate a 19 core 0.75mm2 cable using both heat shrink and scotch cast closures
- Joint a 20 pair telecoms cable
- Joint a 95mm aluminium power cable
- Carry out loop resistance testing and insulation testing both core to core and core to earth
- Practical assessments are included
Features
Hands on experience of joint and testing the different cable types. A simulated environment with the ability to have faults applied such that any errors made do not compromise safety of traffic. One to one training as required using a variety of training delivery methods.
