Westinghouse Graduate Scheme and the Bespoke course by Catalis
The Company
Westinghouse Rail Systems, part of Invensys Rail, deliver large-scale, safety–critical, rail projects worldwide. Mark Kilby is one of those Graduates.
The Westinghouse Graduate Scheme offers exciting career opportunities to those with engineering, software or technology based university degrees. It provides individuals with the opportunity to gain both workplace and off the job training, undertaking project placements.
During his BSc (Hons) in Computer Aided Product Design, Mark completed a year’s work placement with Westinghouse and on Graduation joined 9 others on the Graduate Training Scheme.
To provide these Graduates with an intensive initial training within Signal Engineering, Westinghouse approached trusted training partner TQ Catalis Ltd. Working in close collaboration with the team at Westinghouse, Catalis created a broad based training event on “Signalling Systems and Design”. A bespoke course designed exclusively to meet the needs of those placed on the Westinghouse Graduate Scheme.
Mark and his 9 fellow Graduates attended the course delivered at Catalis’ Derby site, a facility boasting the largest array of Rail Training equipment in the UK.
“Signalling Systems and Design” was delivered in modules to enable graduates to learn in a structured manner that can be easily applied when returning to work. The attendees gain background knowledge and study legislation relating to the design and application within the Rail Industry.
To ensure that all the Graduates had a thorough understanding of their own and their colleague’s roles and responsibilities, they were provided with training in the principles and processes of ‘real life’ signalling design and project management. This hands-on approach means that the Graduates develop a knowledge of all systems and sub systems of railway signalling technology in a logical way.
One common problem for new entrants into Rail is the sheer volume of abbreviations and technical language used within the Industry. This course teaches these quickly and effectively.
“I found the design section of the course very useful as it related to my current role. The modules were in-depth and gave me a great insight into the business, as well as new tools that have helped make me more effective in the design of signalling layouts, spacing signals, and making calculations.”
This was an in-depth course that benefited Mark and the other Graduates careers and ultimately Westinghouse.
Mark continued: “Without the course I would have initially struggled to adapt. The course gave me an understanding that I have been able to apply to my working day. I am equipped to recognise hazards and risks and I now know what legislation must be complied with.
“My notes are still used and applied every day, which helps to prevent any delays in the design stage which could affect my company, our clients or impact upon the success of future contracts.”
Following the overriding success of this course, Westinghouse commissioned Catalis to deliver another 5 week course for the signalling training of 20 Graduates in September this year.
