Who Should Attend

People wanting to maintain their COSS competency. This assessment counts as one of the workplace assessments required by the 2 year COSS competence ‘cycle'. All delegates must produce valid PTS and COSS certificates. Railway Group Standard GO/RT 3358 (Persons responsible for protecting work on or near the Line) requires employers to select delegates for this role based on documented processes to assess aptitude and prior experience.

Objectives

To assess the delegate's ability to set up a safe system of work before any group of staff are allowed to go on or near the line.

Content

Observation of delegate undertaking COSS duties.

Learning Approach

Assessment by observation of performance and questioning and examination of documentary evidence.

Features

Notification of the assessment result will be sent to the delegate's employer, and the NCCA. If this is an ‘upgrading' assessment following initial COSS training, notification will also be sent to NCCA.

Requirements

To maintain COSS competence each delegate must undertake the required number of assessments within each 2 year ‘cycle'. Sentinel Guidance documents suggest that the first assessment in each ‘cycle' is part of a refresher event (See COSS Re-certification information sheet)
