Who Should Attend
Those required to carry out risk assessments in the workplace or those responsible for examining completed risk assessments.
Objectives
This course enables trainees to study the methodology of workplace risk assessment, and allows trainees the opportunity to practice application of the skills learned in a classroom workshop environment. The course focuses on the ‘general' principles of effective risk assessment and is suitable for anyone with responsibility for carrying out risk assessments, regardless of the nature or area of work, task or equipment being assessed.
Content
Health and Safety Law:
- A study of why risk assessment is necessary and what obligations exist for employers under health and safety law
Reasonable Practicability:
- A study of the application of the principle of ‘reasonable practicability' and the steps that must be taken by the employer to ensure that a suitable and sufficient risk assessment has been carried out
What is Risk Assessment?
- A study of the key definitions applicable to the process, and of where risk assessment fits into a health and safety management strategy
Five Steps to Risk Assessment:
- Identifying hazards
- Identifying who is at risk and how
- Evaluating the risks and deciding whether adequate controls exist
- Recording the assessment
- Reviewing the assessment
Learning Approach
Group Exercises:
- Exercise 1: Trainees are given an example of a workplace task or environment and asked to prepare a short presentation on how they would apply the risk assessment process, and what type of hazards they feel may be relevant. The situations given are based on case studies, giving the trainees the opportunity to compare their findings with actual assessments carried out by others
- Exercise 2: Trainees are asked to consider a task they are familiar with in their own workplace, and are asked to prepare a short written overview of the hazards and risks associated with that task. Other trainees will be given the opportunity to question or comment upon this assessment
- Exercise 3: Trainees are asked to complete a short written quiz on the key areas covered during the training. This is an opportunity for trainees to ensure that they are confident in the use of risk assessment terminology and in the theory of the process
